Chapter Seven

Inner Healing

A woman I will call Jane was brought to me by her concerned brother. She was in her mid-thirties, and her life had dysfunctional written all over it. She described a marriage she hated; a relationship with her children that was meaningful but marred by her angry outbursts; and a childhood and earlier marriage marked by hurt, abuse, jealousy, resentment and fear. Jane and some of her children also had disturbing physical problems. She had consulted with several psychologists and had given up on them.

From what Jane and her brother shared with me, it seemed likely she was demonized. She feared that she might be, though she had believed the myth that Christians could not be demonized. In addition, like many who believe that myth and also suspect they might have demons, she found it difficult to be sure she was saved.

The question I faced with Jane, as with all others, was, “Where should I start?” After my usual prayer, in which I asked the Lord to show me where to start, we began. During the next three hours, we ended the session without having challenged the demons. We probed and prayed through quite a number of the wounding events in her past. We worked on anger, resentment, jealousy and fear, and we also led Jane to forgive everyone she remembered who had hurt her.

As I have indicated several times, that is the way to weaken any demons that might be present. It also is the way to bring healing to the badly wounded parts of a person, whether or not demons are involved. This is typical of my approach to anyone who comes for counseling and deliverance.

On Jane’s second visit, with her permission, I challenged some demons. By the power of the Holy Spirit, I was able to release her from them. The change was so great that she later reported she was going through an identity crisis, as she was learning how to live in the newness that became possible when she dealt honestly with her inner pain in the power of Jesus.

The demons were an important factor in Jane’s previous experience of life. Indeed, they were running her a merry chase as long as she had a lot of unresolved emotions on which they could feed. With many of those hard-to-handle emotions healed, however, the demons were kicked out comparatively easily. Jane still had quite a bit of work to do to change her habits. But with her, as with all others, the most important part of the work was (and is) inner healing.

However, many in deliverance ministry go after the demons right away. I find that approach presents at least two problems. First, it challenges the demons when they are strong. This can result in a big fight that is not good for the deliverance team or the person in whom the demons live. Second, the amount of what I am calling “garbage” may be so great that the person is a sitting duck,
